About

Our Story

Moonlight Vizslas got its start back in 2005, when we brought home our first Vizsla, “Csilla”. She was supposed to be a pet male according to our questionnaire, but we ended up with a show female. Adventuring into the world of AKC sports has resulted in lifelong friendships and we are hooked on the breed’s intelligence, athleticism and versatility. Becoming a breeder was a natural progression. Each of our puppy owners join our big extended family and we enjoy seeing each other regularly and also bringing first time owners into the breed. A good support system is a must!

We were fortunate to have been mentored by respected and established breeder mentors (some in the breed more than 50 years) to help guide our breeding program which includes proving our dogs in competition, extensive health testing and selective breeding for type, temperament and overall health.

We strive to only breed dogs of sound temperament, correct breed type, natural hunting ability, and who are health tested. Planning a litter is a huge undertaking which begins months (sometimes years!) ahead of time. We do extensive health testing before breeding; our dogs are OFA cleared for Hips, Thyroid and Eyes which adheres to the CHIC recommended health screenings for Vizslas (Recommended Tests/CHIC). Often they have PennHip, Cardiac and Elbow testing as well; and there will be a multi-generational history of verifiable health clearances.

We prove our dogs in competition before breeding; both the Sire and Dam of our puppies will, themselves, be AKC Conformation Champions/Grand Champions (not just a “champion pedigree”) who are AKC and DNA Registered.

When we do have puppies available, they will be adopted out with a health guarantee, and a lifetime of support and advice to the new family. For the first 8-10 weeks of life, our puppies are extensively socialized and raised with the highest standards possible inside the home (not in a kennel). The foundation for crate training and housebreaking will be started. Each litter is raised via Puppy Culture protocols which is the gold standard for raising puppies.

If for any reason, an owner cannot keep their Vizsla, we get first right of refusal which means the dog must be returned to us.

We are a member of the Vizsla Club of America, and abide by the club’s Code of Ethics and serve as the Registry of Merit (ROM) Chairperson (since 2012). Additional membership in several regional clubs include the South Coast Vizsla Club (President and Rescue Coordinator) and Rocky Mountain Vizsla Club and Lone Cypress Vizsla Club. We are both an AKC (American Kennel Club) Bred with H.E.A.R.T. and Breeder of Merit - Silver Level.

We are very passionate about Vizslas and happy to discuss the breed in detail to determine if a Vizsla is a good fit your lifestyle. This is a very energetic and demanding breed that more often than not will shape your life to revolve around their needs. For many this works, for others, not so much!
